Mathilde was born in Rhoden, Principality of Waldeck and Pyrmont was the fourth daughter and tenth child George I, Prince of Waldeck and Pyrmont and his first wife Princess Auguste of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen.〔(The Peerage )〕
